| Education companies! Can you spot their errors? |
|
|
What's wrong with this statement from a company that provides tutoring in reading and writing?
The most important thing on our minds is how your unique student will reach their full potential.
This text has at least 3 errors:
Champions Online Tutoring is a divsion of Knowledge Learning Corporation School partnerships (KLC School Partnerships), the nation's leader in the delivery of cusomized educational and enrichment programs for children during the out-of-school time.
Our online math tutoring solution for grades 6-8 delivers:

- An interactive, research-based curriculum adapted from our proven classroom format
- Individualized instruction by fully trained tachers at a 4 to 1 ratio

How about in this:
But don't worry, if you don't see exactly what you are looking for, find a nearby location on the map and give us a call.
Yet another one:
At Dean’s Learning Center, ALL students will:
- work on a reading program tailored to their INVIDIDUAL needs while improving fluency (reading rate), comprehension, vocabulary, phonemic awareness and phonics [You know, if you're going to misspell a word, don't put it in all caps!]
- increase their reading rate at least 50% from his or her starting rate
This one's from a school district's home page:
In the web article about the Education Minnesota grant, we incorrectly labeled Lyla Peterson as a teacher, she is indeed a Licensed Social Worker. And, we omitted another key grant writer, Carol Welton, OTR.
One last one (because we have to stop at some point or we'll end up writing a book)
Additionally, the use of Rubrics (which are commonly used by teachers for evaluating and scoring writing) are also taught so students understand how their work can benefit from self and peer evaluation. Journal writing is also incorporated into each session to build confidence and effectiveness in everyday writing.

You spotted all the pronoun number problems, of which there are many. This is a fairly common problem we have to fix, so common, in fact, that we added it to the Training Manual.
Regarding the sample from the Education Minnesota Grant:
In the web article about the Education Minnesota gGrant, we incorrectly labeled Lyla Peterson as a teacher; she is indeed actually a Licensed Social Worker. And, we We also omitted another key grant writer, Carol Welton, OTR.
Here's my take on this sentence:
In the web article about the Education Minnesota Grant, we incorrectly labeled Lyla Peterson as a teacher. She is actually a Licensed Social Worker. We also omitted another key grant writer, Carol Welton, OTR.
However, the semi-colon works, too.
In the Dean's Learning Center sample, I think "their" works because it refers to "students."
Perhaps the biggest problem, though, is that these are organizations responsible for teaching children to read and write. |

I started to put that period there, but given my recent question about the semi-colon, I decided to use it. ^..^
I see what you're saying about the use of "their".
I like this forum. Thank you for setting it up. |

There's a mistake in the last line. If it's "their" reading rate, shouldn't it be "from their starting rate"? If I had kids, I wouldn't send them there!
